Learning and developing touch-typing skills can assist your child to understand what is taught to them academically and strengthen their ability to demonstrate their knowledge. The purpose of our program is to teach touch-typing skills, while introducing software commonly used in communication. Students with LD often have difficulty writing or getting their thoughts down on paper. Children who have trouble taking adequate notes from the chalkboard or avoid written assignments will also benefit from the program. Being familiar and comfortable with a computer aids concentration, reduces anxiety and assists your child in recognizing and identifying his or her inaccuracies.
Mastering computer skills can help significantly those experiencing difficulties with basic skills. Our goal is to help learning disabled individuals achieve the independence, confidence and personal satisfaction which effective literacy brings.
We use software that engages students and reinforces continued practice using everyday words and sentences. We will teach your child to type while reinforcing spelling, grammar and composition. We use lessons, games and exercises, and link the activities to common home software like Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer, introducing them to the basics of word processing and internet use, including safe-surfing techniques. We provide easy to follow directions and systematic, clear feedback about performance. Level 2 builds on the skills learned in Level 1, but increases the challenge level and introduces more advanced software techniques.
The program is one hour per week for 10 weeks, running six times during the school year. The fee for the program is $150, with a $25 discount for LDA members.
